That’s right folks, one of Scotland’s most underrated bands, VASA, are back! If you’re unfamiliar with the name, VASA is smack dab in the middle of the European math/post/weird rock renaissance, trading in the same kind of upbeat, powerful, and catchy music as their compatriots in bands like Alpha Male Tea Party, Aiming for Enrike, The Physics House Band, and more. Their 2015 release, Colours, is one of Heavy Blog’s favorite releases from the genre and (at least for me) one of the places where we started our fascination and coverage of this sub-sub-genre of excellent music. While they released an EP in 2016, it’s been way too long since we’ve had a proper release from these high-energy lads and, lo and behold, our prayers have been answered!

On February 22nd of 2020 (yeah it’s 2020 now, get used to it), VASA will release Heroics, a full length release promising to be chock-full of tasty riffs, thick bass, and punchy drums. To reassure us of such, the band have also released an eponymous single to give us a taste and gosh jolly is it delicious. “Heroics” has everything that made me full in love with the band originally: the lovely way in which the chaotic first few lines blend in within the brighter, open-chord guitars, only to come back later on for a whirlwind of notes. The scintillating leads playing before the main, saccharine riff explodes into glory. The tight groove section, bass and drums conspiring to set our hips to dancing and our foots to tapping. All of this, and more, comes crashing together to create a sound that reminds us that VASA is one of the best bands working with this sound; nothing out there is quite as infectious as this.

To top it all off, the boys are touring the UK soon with none other than Thank You Scientist! Good lord that’ll be a show. Head on over to this link to stream “Heroics” wherever you see fit, grab some merch from the band, and stay posted on what they have coming next. VASA are back baby and I for one couldn’t be more excited.
